Match Report

Shot shy City a soft touch

CARDIFF CITY 2 EXETER CITY O

EXETER'S inability to put opposing defences under pressure away from home was clearly evident in this game and they managed just two direct shots on target throughout the match. Exeter fielding the same side which was defeated 2-0 at Bournemouth on Saturday never looked as if they were going to get their first away win of the season. Though Cardiff  in the end made hard work of their victory.

Brian Godfrey's side found themselves down after just nine minutes after a bad piece of defensive play following Cardiff corner. The ball was cleared to Mullen on the edge of the Exeter area and his header found Jeff Hemmerman completely unmarked as the Exeter defence rushed out. The Cardiff man was calm and scored from six yards giving keeper Len Bond little chance of saving. Peter Rogers was responsible for Exeter's only first half shot which was saved by Thomas. Exeter were lucky not to go further behind when Lee Roberts headed off the line after Micaleffs lob had beaten Bond. Steve Hatter on loan from Fulham was booked for a a foul on Hemmerman just before half time.

In the second half Exeter had much more of the game but only had one shot throughout the second 45 minutes, when an Aidan Gibson effort was saved by Thomas. Lee Roberts became the 2nd Exeter player to go into the referee's book when he was cautioned for a foul on David Tong. Dave Pullar was introduced as a substitute for Gibson with 30 minutes left. The move which ended Exeter's hopes of getting anything from the game with three minutes left, was started by Bennett who sent Micallef through who crossed for Hemmerman to score his second goal of the game.
