ST JAMES'S PARK:

2nd February 1957

A poor game at St James's Park, attended by a crowd of 5,000, ended as it began, goalless. Towards the end Northampton appeared to realise they would not win the match and their delaying tactics, for example, strolling to fetch the ball each time it went "dead" aroused the crowd to slow hand-clapping.
EXETER CITY: Hunter; Mitchell, Ferrier; Lackenby, Harvey, Packer; Thomas, Divers, Currie, John, Rees.
NORTHAMPTON:- Pickering; Marston, Patterson; Yeoman, Gale, Poole; Morrow, Mills, Asher, Leek, Fowler.

The game in the last 15 minutes had also become very rough, and there were more fouls than attempts to play proper football. Lackenby was admonished by the referee for a foul on Mills, while Patterson became the subject of loud barracking for continually using unfair tactics against Rees.

Southern League
Hereford United v Exeter City Res.

Hereford United at Hereford beat Exeter City Reserves by 5 goals (Clayton, Jones 2, Williams, and Niblett).

Clayton in form

Hereford 5-0 Exeter

Only light footed forwards could beat the sea of mud in which Hereford beat their bogy team Exeter. Lightest of them all was a 19-year-old amateur, Ron Clayton, who ran circles round the Exeter defence, but Exeter goalkeeper Bell must not carry all the blame for the five goals, for he was bogged down in the morass of the goalmouth. It was Clayton's game as he seemed to skateover the mud, leaving the Exeter defenders floundering. He scored the first goal in the fifth minute from a Niblett pass. Hereford only just scored from a penalty by Jones which Bell stopped but the linesman flagged as having crossed the line. It was Clayton who gave Williams Hereford's third goal three minutes from the interval.nMore at home in the mud, Hereford piled on pressure in the second half and, with Exeter playing ten men through injury, Niblett scored Here- ford s fourth goal in the 64th minute, Jones added the fifth in the 82nd minute.
