Exeter City threw away the chance of ending the season with a home win after taking the lead in the 16th minute with a goal by Lackenby after a mistake by the Bournemouth defenceFor most of the first half City were on the attack and moving the ball about accuratelu and speedilyThey exposed weaknesses in the Bournemouth defence but did not make use of the scoring opportunities, Once Bournemouth had equalised in the 54th minute when Newsham raced away to beat the faultering Harvey and slipped the ball past Bell from almost on the dead ball line, it was all over Bournemouth played some smooth moving football and only the heroic efforts of John, Mitchell and Simpson kept then within reasonable limits, Packer fell away after a fair first half, Harvey never found a way to block the middle and Bell made a tragic error to give Bournemouth the points in the 73rd minute, He did not move to Newsham's 25 yard shot which sailed into the net, Bournemouth should have had a third when former City player Ellaway's header was blatantly fisted over the bar by John but amazingly the referee gave a corner.
