Twenty minutes from time Mansfield were trailing 2-0 with no hope. Ten minutes later substitute Burns scored his first ever league goal and a minute later Gregson, the visitors main danger man made a chance for Hall who shot from 18 yards to earn a point for Mansfield, These were the minutes that changed the whole match, for City with new signings Ray Keeley and John Evans in the side were storming along and looking well set for their first win in the league since New Years Day, In the final minutes City's defence became panicky and uncertain. Exeter had started slowly, but with two new men, both working hard and showing much needed ability in the City forward line, they began to get a grip on the game. In the 17th minute, Keeley, scored direct from a free kick 20 yards out. Shortly after Evans had the ball in the net but it was disallowed after the referee consulted a linesman, Just before half time the hard working Wilf Carter headed a good goal after Alan Banks had a header deflected,

DORCHESTER TOWN 1-0 CITY RESERVES
Exeter Team
Shearing; Fulton, Arbury; Anderson, Peapell, Cavanan; Rice, McLean, Elliott, Richardson, Stuckey.

Scorer: Dorchester: Black,

Left back Harry Black knew nothing of his selection to lead the Dorchester Town attack until yesterday and he knew even less about the goal he scored in the 37th minute. Peter Shearing parried a cross from Whalley and centre half Dennis Peapell in attempting to clear, cannoned his shot off Black's back into the net. This freak goal won an otherwise uninspiring game.

The first half followed the same old familiar pattern, City had 85 per cent of the play but constantly spoiled constructive midfield moves by weak or off target shooting. Yet by the end of the game the fans were cheering the team off the pitch after they had won 2-0, City spent the entire second half keeping the Torquay defence in a constant panic by peppering their goal from all directions. George McLean scored in the 55th minute with a 25 yard shot and 16 minutes later Alan Riding clinched matters with a lobbed shot over the goalkeepers head."
