This was anything but the bitter struggle to avoid reigation that the City and their supporters had expected. Instead it was a walkover to their biggest win of the season, Instead of concentrating on the opposition and stopping them from scoring, City settled down to get the goals themselves. Alan Banks got City got off to a good start by cashing in on a poor back pass by Mckenzie after 12 minutes. Three Minutes later he scored again, this time with a glorious first time shot after a centre from Cecil Smyth, The Brentford team were completely bottled up by City's system. Only left winger Docherty caused the Exeter defence any trouble, George McLean back in the first team after nearly two months, had his best game since joining the club last Summer. McLean made several good chances and scored two goals himself, with a 44th minute header and a 73rd minute shot, it was right on time when another recalled man Jack Kennedy rounded off a more than useful display by hitting the fifth goal from 18 yards, City now need at least 12 points from their last ten games to keep away from relegation,

Although St James' Park was virtually a sea of mud both teams gave a creditable performance. The all important goal came in the 27th minute from the penalty spot. Former Torquay player Jeff Tolchard was brought down in the area and Dennis Peapell scored from the spot, As the game went on Exeter began to play better particularly in the second half, when Peapell hit the bar with a tremendous 30 yarder.
