For Exeter City it was their first defeat in four games, For Oxford United their first win in five, and they thoroughly deserved it, After weeks of continuous rain the pitch was really heavy but this was no excuse for such a leaden footed start by the City, Within three minutes Oxford had scored, Ron Atkinson chipped the ball forward to brother Graham who flicked it into the net. This goal stunned the City and they did not recover until the second half, After a half time pep talk City came out full of fight after the interval, but they frittered away chance after chance For the second time in three games, it was left to George Ley to score. Running onto a Jack Kennedy free kick, he blasted in a shot from 20 yards, Fearnley denied City further goals with a string of fine saves, In the 88th minute Oxford scored the winning goal through Calder to reward a good fighting display by the visitors. This was a game which should fairly have been a draw and though they lost, the City certainly have not slipped back to their earlier haphazard stuff,

Scorers:
Exeter: Tolchard 2, Sweetman,
Exeter included six players who have had Football League experience this season, They gave the best display seen from a team at bridport for a very long time, Thair inspiration was 37 year old Arnold Mitchell, who with inside forwards Dermot Curtis and Graham Rees produced football that Bridport could not match, A splendid run and pass by Rees ended with Jeff Tolchárd putting Exeter ahead in the 12th minute, Tommy Sweetman scored the second goal from Mitchell's pass in the 56th minute, Tolchard completed the scoring 5 minutes from time after clever play between Curtis and Mitchell.
