Until 8 minutes from time it looked as if the Southend Jinx on the City had struck again. For in 27 post war games, Exeter have managed only three winsbut then Alan Banks got the best goal seen at St James Park this season with a flying header that cancelled out Southend's 65th minute goal through inside right Smith, For the first half City had 70 per cent of the play, but they did not take advantage of it and Banks, Dennis Peapell, and George Ley all missed chances, Gradually Southend settled down and they could have been ahead at half time if Firmani had not slipped on the frozen surface and sliced his shot from 8 yards.

In the second half City still had most of the play and when Smith snatched Southend's goal with a low shot that bounced in off the post, it came as a shock. It spurred City into some real fight at last, Ley had a stinging shot turned over the bar by Roberts, who then saved from McLean at point blank range. With everyone except the City players just about given up hope on a freezing cold afternoon, Banks gloriously headed home McLean's centre, City had given an edgy, uncomfortable performance for most of the game, Southend United were managed by former City player Alvin Williams, whilst another ex-Exeter player, Peter Gordon was their trainer.

  • The Western League fixture between Dorchester Town and Exeter City reserves was postponed,

WE CANNOT SEE!

Many supporters have been complaining to the City about those people who leave their seats in the grandstand prior to the end of matches, and today City secretary Dick Miller made an appeal to them, He asks them not to stand in the grandstand exits, because they block the view of the game for other spectators who stay until the final whistle,

CITY'S CLUBHOUSE APPEAL REJECTED.

Exeter City have been refused planning permission to build a clubhouse, which they estimatedmwould have brought them in an income of around £10,000 per year The building would have cost £7,000nand be situated at the rear of 18 Old Tiverton Road on the club's practice pitch, Club secretary Dick Miller said they will appeal against the decision and continue to search for a suitable site. They realised the need for a club house as much as the supporters themselves. They had promised them one and they would not let them down. There were 43 individual objections and a petition signed by over 200 residents in the area and the result was a public inquiry on 20th July, The Minister's decision came in a letter which read- "In his report, the Inspector considered that although it might be reasonable to permit the erection of a small building on the site for use as administrative offices by the committee of the supporters club and for preparation of light refreshments to be served during the course of matches played on the adjoining ground, it would be wrong to permit a clubhouse for social and other activities indulged in by members of the club. He thought that the proposed clubhouse would prove inadequate for the numbers expected to use it and that applications for extensions would be likely to follow in a short time. Any subsequent extension would involve encroachment on car parking space, leading to undesirable parking in nearby residential streetsThe existing, and the proposed access to Old Tiverton Road was in a dangerous position with inadequate sight splays to the South West along a busy highway frequently congested by parked vehiclesHe thought that no substantial increase in the use of the site by motor vehicles should be permitted. The Inspector also considered the effect of activities normally associated with a licensed social club would have on the nearby houses was of great importanceThe club would likely to attract many people and the noise they and thier vehicles would generate,, especially late in the evening would disturb the local residents at a time when it was reasonable to expect the district to be quiet, On all these grounds, the Inspector recommended that planning permission be refused. For the same reason he thought that planning permission granted for the erection on another part of the site were ill founded and that the local planning authority be invited to reconsider their decision,"
