This must be one of the most fantastic results of the day, for City without Banks were goalless at half time. Neither side played well enough to have deserved a goal. In the second half there was no change in the pattern, yet City scored four times, Just once in the whole game did the Scunthorpe side really trouble Exeter, that was midway through the second half in a sudden breakthrough, but the visiting forwards vere as nervous and erratic as the City defenders and Shearing was able to save successive point blank shots from Scott and Bedford and a header from Hutton Exeter had just two consistent men, rightback Smyth and left half Fulton. Both were solid in defence and ready to make the quick break and back up their forwards, It was the strong sun which really gave Exeter their breakthrough, in the 55th minute Welsh skied a centre with Sidebottom blinded as the ball dropped, McLean got underneath it and nodded the ball in Welsh himself scored with a good low shot four minutes later, McLean ran half the length of the field to hammer in number three in the 80th minute and Curtis interpassed with McLean to finish the move off with a good shot to get the fourth goal just on time.
Western League
TORQUAY UNITED 5-3 CITY RESERVES.
Barnett; Taylor, MacDonald; Rice, Anderson, Balson, Stuckey, Riding, House, Rees, Tolchard,
In an action packed patch Torquay went ahead in the third minute through Atkinson, Exeter shocked them by drawing level only two minutes later through Alan Riding, then went ahead within 60 seconds through former Plainmoor winger Jeff Tolchard. It was near half time when Atkinson rode high above the Exeter defence to equalise with a great header, again from a Pyn cross. In the 48th minute Somers put Torquay in front and the hard working Murphy added number four in the 70th minutes. Six minutes later Evans made it 5-2 before Stuckey netted for Exeter in the 83rd minute.
