A goal up in eight minutes, City should have gone on to smash Southend but they did not have the drive, Peapell's pass to Curtis' who smashed the ball home gave Exeter just the start that they wanted but they did not capitalise on it, Ineffective in attack and feeble in midfield, City turned into a team dedicated to stop the Southend attacks and in the end they were not even good at that. Southend were trailing until just before the break when Slater and Firmani combined well for Gilfillan to equalise. They came out for the second half in a very determined mood, Smith shot past Shearing in the 52nd minute and McKinven added a third goal with a shot from the wing which nobody saw until was back of net, Peapell foresaking his defensive role in the 75th minute put the ball over, it was headed about by the Exeter forwards and the Southend defence before dropping to Curtis who snapped up City's second goal, Now only a goal behindExeter fought hard for the draw, but McKinven sank their hopes when he scored Southend's fourth two minutes from time,

With three goals in the opening 15 minutes, the game promised to develop into a typical local derby. But there were no more goalsIn fact, the game got worse as it went along and by the end spectators were becoming bored with it. Bideford scored in the first minute when Chappell steered the ball into an empty net, He scored again 12 minutes later, his shot from 25 yards curling into the net past Barnett, Then left half Mike Balson reduced the arrears from the edge of the penalty area, but from then on the game began to die a slow death,

CITY BID FOR £10,000 FLAYER.

No one realises the peril of Exeter City's League position better than the club's officials themselves and chairman Mr Reg Rose revealed this morning that in an effort to pull away from the bottom, they have made their biggest ever cash bid for a player. The price was £10,000, a staggering figure for City and it would have to come out of the directors pockets according to Mr Rose. The chairman could not name the player, but said he was a player who could have given Exeter City several seasons service, but the bid failed as did half a dozen other inquiries that City made for players last week,
