City met a peak form Millwall who went to the top of the Third Division with this victory. After half an hour of preliminary sparring City were outplayed. They tried defence in depth and at times played it well, but there was no stopping the hacking, thrustful Millwall attack City made raids but they were fewer and feebler The difference was that the sum total of City's efforts was one early Curtis header which was held on the line by Stepney, It would almost have taken a calculator to add up all the attacks that Millwall made. Shearing had his busiest game this season. The result was almost a continuous roar of a 12,000 crowd to keep Millwall surging on. It was a fast, often dramatic game with three very good goals, The first was from a rocket like Julians header in the 32nd minute Number two came just after half time when Rowan swooped in on a long cross and hammered in a near range shot The third was four minutes from time as Neil cracked in a beautiful 25 yard drive past Shearing. MacDonald, Anderson and Harvey all played like Daniels' at the Den and all for nothing in the end, McLean was City's lone raider, for while City had ten men battling it out at the back, McLean ran his heart out and his legs off on his own in attack,
