Bad luck, not bad play cost City another defeat at BrightonTwo mistakes caused by the greasy surface and a slippery ball cost City two goals when they were the better side. With the game only 17 minutes old, it proved to be a big handicap, yet the City fought to the last man and the last minute trying to beat it, Brighton's opening goal after twelve minutes was scored from close range when Smith met Gould's centre and five minutes later they scored again when Collins rammed in a shot from 25 yards which was misjudged by Shearing and the ball slipped through his hands into the netThis should have been a signal for Brighton to consolidate, instead we saw City fighting back hard and looking a useful combination. The perservering Exeter side shook Brighton with a goal in the 68th minute by Carter, that arch goalsnatcher moving purposefully through the penalty area before smashing home a fierce shotExeter forced the home defence into hurried clearances and Powney was forced to make some splendid saves to deny City a point that they really deserved.

Exeter snatched victory after trailing 2-0 at one stage. The revival was largely due to long service right winger Graham Rees, After Alan Riding had put City on the road to recovery, Rees grabbed two goals late in the second half to give Exeter City the points, M. Clausen scored the two Minehead goals. Besides Rees and Riding only Alan Barnett cameo ut of this game with any credit. The Sheriff of Exeter, Alderman Percy Hilton, deputised as linesman for the first ten minutes before the official linesman arrived.
