Exeter City were slowly submerged by Walsall who prolonged the agony, until seven minutes from the end before they scored their second goal. City desparate for points to pull away from the bottom of the Third Division were never really in with a chance of winning. The defence was not too bad, but the attack was pathetic, The forwards failed to move into attacking positions and get the ball, Only Alan Banks looked occasionally dangerous, he hit the post in the second half, Most of the time the build up was painfully slow, So it was not a happy home debut for 18 year old Ray Elliott, He ran hard, but the City badly missed the experience of John Evans to balance up their attack. Walsall were another side to prove that if you have two wingers, you can work your way through any defensive system, Riley on the right, paved the way for Middleton's 25th minute goal, he did in fact have an earlier effort disallowed for a foul on Alan Barnett, but there was no mistake with a spectacular overhead kick. In the 83rd minute Taylor made sure of a Walsall win with a great individual goal,

POINTS ARE NEEDED QUICKLY CITY !
Exeter City manager Ellis Stuttard was in conference with his first team players for a long match inquest and straightening out talks this morning following the 2-0 defeat by Walsall, Last night's beating has put the City manager in an ever more serious position. They have not won a game since January 1st and unless they start picking up some points very quickly, relegation will become an absolute certainty.
This evening's Wessex Youth League fixture between Exeter City and Bristol Rovers has been postponed because the St James' Park is waterlogged
