A shock goal by Exeter City's tireless 37 year old skipper Arnold Mitchell was the one bright spot in a dull game 16 minutes from the end. Wilf Carter crossed the ball into the centre and it ran loose to Mitchell standing on the edge of the penalty area. He ran forward and scored, what may prove to be a relegation saving goal, This was City's fourth visit to Oxford and they have still to be beaten or even concede a goal. The home side was twice thwarted by a post, but apart from the odd flashes of clever ball play, they showed little constructive football and in the main the game was a scrappy affair. The City attack was generally well held by the Oxford defence but Alan Banks and George McLean did break clear on occasions, and Jimmy Blain showed some good speed on the left wing. City's man of the match was Ray Harford. In the air he had command, On the ground he had positional strength and common sense, Overall he radiated confidence and control. The defence in general played very well but they were bolstered at times by everyone across the front line from Wilf Carter to Jimmy Blain,

Exeter City were much too good for the visiting Yeovil side and deserved to win by a bigger margin. Only good goalkeepeing kept the scoreline down. It was hard to see how Yeovil had become the Western Counties Floodlit League champions on this display. Their defence was split wide open too easily by City's enterprising attack. John Evans (12th minute), and Graham Rees (39th minute), gave exeter á comfortable half-time lead, City were faster and their ball control better, They put out a strong side but it was a little surprising to see them master a powerful Southern League team, Jeff Tolchard made it 3-0 in the 57th minute, Ashe, one of Yeovil's better players, scored after 82 minutes.
