This was a disastrous match, axeter never looked like gaining their first away win of the season, They failed despite chances that came their way early on. Things might have worked out differently had Dermot Curtis not missed a gilt edged chance after just 45 seconds. He injured his knee and was replaced at half-time by Dennis Peapell, City had many narrow escapes after this and Peter Shearing made a number of good saves, Shrewsbury tried too often to walk the ball through a 10 man defence. But they took the lead after 23 minutes when a Thom corner found Meredith who drove the ball past Shearing, Exeter had difficulty in breaking away. When they did, the Shrewsbury defence had little trouble in dealing with them, Jimmy Blain, in his second game for City, was always a danger when in possession, In the second half Shrewsbury took command, Clarke scored after 51 minutes. Hemsley drove through a ruck of players to make it 3-0 after 54 minutes, and ten minutes later Boardman added a fourth goal, to send the City home a very dejected side.
