Exeter desperate for points to lift them clear of the bottom of the Third Division and without a win in their previous five games, found themselves fighting desperately in defence once again. The out of form City forwards had little answer to table topping Millwall's well drilled defence. Millwall turned defence into attack after 35 minutes when top scoring Scot Curran gathered a long clearance from keeper Stepney in midfield and scored with a fierce 30 yard drive, Millwall's defence featured five men back deep and their superb understanding often caught Exeter City's slow moving forwards in an offside trap, Banks twice missed good chances for City when he was no more than ten yards from goal. Exeter speeded up their game after the interval and were much more effective. City began to use their wing men and the tactic paid off quickly when Banks crashed in a great equaliser from close range, Millwall began to open the game out for the first time with defenders moving forward, In the 70th minute the lively Curran headed Millwall back into the lead from 12 yards following a perfect Rowan corner.
