CITY UNDER PRESSURE BUT TAKE THE POINTS.

BRENTFORD 1:
Phillips; Hawley, Jones; Scott, Gelson, Higginson; Block, Bonson, Lawther, Cobb, Fielding.

EXETER CITY 2: Shearing; Smyth, Ley, PeapellHarvey, Buckingham; Stuckey, Banks, McLean, Curtis, Blain,

Scorers:
Brentford: Cobb,
Exeter City: Peapell, Banks,

Attendance: 5,943,

Lowly Exeter City despite being hammered for most of the game were value for their first away win of the season. They took their chances and their effective defensive barrier proved too strong for the powder puff Brentford attack, City's first goal came in the 13th minute and 18 year old Bruce Stuckey in a pleasing league debut, laid on the pass for Dennis Peapell to slam his first league goal of the season from 25 yards. Apart from two more pot shots by Peapell, Exeter's attack was mainly restricted to breakaways. It seemed ridiculous for all the pressure that Brentford put on the City defence that they could not score, Yet dominate as they did, they failed really to extend Peter Shearing until the last half hour, It seemed justice was to be done after half an hour when Cobb ran through to slot the ball wide of Shearing. But four minutes later an intended back pass from Gelson did not carry on the greasy surface and Alan Banks nipped in to divert a shot that trickled in to the net off the post for the winning goal. Brentford missed at least four good chances, but if any side was due for a slice of luck this season, it was City. For once the ball ran well for them but they made it run well by their own efforts and registered their first away win of the season, Arnold Mitchell took over as trainer for the game following the sacking of Albert Keetley.

WESTERN LEAGUE

EXETER CITY RESERVES 4:
Davis; Taylor, Arbury; Rice, Carter, Balson, Richardson, Rees, House, Tolchard, Copp.

BARNSTAPLE TOWN 0;
Clark; Pope, Penfold; Edmunds, Fewings, Smith; Sanders, Meadows, Flower, Ley, Mock,

Scorers:
Exeter : Rees 2, Richardson, Tolchard,

If Barnstaple had taken their first half chances then this result may well have been different. As the game wore on Exeter got more and more on top, and by the end were in command, Barnstaple were handicapped by an injury received by Sanders, who eventually limped off in the 75th minute. Overall this was certainly one of the better reserve matches seen at the Park this season, Graham Rees scored in the 14th and 15th minutes, Phil Richardson added another in the 70th minute, and Jeff Tolchard made it 4-0 in the 89th minute.
