Exeter City flattered to deceive at York when they started full of promise on a muddy pitch but long before the finish their energy was sapped and they could not complain about their defeat, it could have been different had the City forwards shown as much ability in their finishing work as they did in their approach workFor 30 minutes they had York City floundering in the mud against speedy and well conceived attacks. Ray Elliott on his debut, skimmed the crossbar with one effort, Within 60 seconds of the second half, Dunmore beat Keith Harvey to put York City ahead. Three minutes later he converted a penalty awarded when Hamstead was tripped close to goal. These goals settled the issue and the surprise was that York, in view of their relentless second half pressure did not add to their score, It was a rather dour relgation struggle in which York merited the points after a very shaky start, but City missed their way in the early stages when they held the upper hand, Prominent for Exeter were keith Harvey, Des Anderson, and John Evans until the last had to go off and be replaced by Jimmy Blain,
