Dermot Curtis who has been absent for the latest 14 first team games provided an instant improvement to the City attack. He laid on a succession of intelligent through balls and he worked hard all over the field. To cap it all he scored a great goal after 30 minutes with a drive from the edge of the penalty area, Everything came to life at once. There was action and determination in the team. The forward line moved far more confidently. It was even good to see the near misses after a lack of goalmouth actiopn that there has been in the past few games, In defence Ray Harford played a cool, steady game, and looked a capable deputy for the long serving Keith Harvey. In the 73rd minute City made sure of the points when Alan Banks scored with an 18 yard shot. Several more chances just eluded the revitalised City side. The supporters appreciated Exeter's efforts, and at last an occasion at St James' Park began to look and feel like a football match again.

This was just not Exeter City's season, struggling in the league, quickly knocked out of the FA Cup and Football League Cup's, and now they have lost the Devon Professional Bowl which they have held for the last three years. It was amostly relaxed open sort of game which City threw away after being 2-0 up in 28 minutes, Ray Elliott and John Evans were the scorers, both were well worked goals and should have been sufficient to have taken the City through to the final. A persistent Etheridge scrambled a goal for Plymouth and almost on time Bryce Fulton gave away a penalty and the equaliser, John Hore scoring from the spot, In the second half City lost almost all their grip on the middle of the field and Plymouth were allowed to take over. It took Argyle a long time to get The winning goal, just five minutes from extra time when Mike Bickle beat Keith Harvey for the first time with a great header, The long passing movements of John Evans and Jack Kennedy was a feature of the City performance, Despite the fact that both sides had a reserve team look about them, there was still a fair amount of league experience on the field, Argyle deserved their win for their persistent play.
