DEVON DERBY ENDS IN A GOALLESS DRAW.
CROWD WILL BE GLAD TO FORGET GAME WITH TORQUAY.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3RD:
CITY 0 TORQUAY UNITED 0

All roads led to St James's Park today for Exeter City's match with Torquay United. Long before the kick-off crowds were arriving either on foot or by car, by coach, and by train. Half an hour before the start there was an estimated 9,000 already inside the ground, and the prominent display of both teams' colours gave the crowd a proper "Devon Derby" appearance. Both teams were led on to the field by their mascots, 72 years old Mervyn Scoble of the Exmouth and Exeter City Supporters Club and 8 years old Haydn Morgan of the Torquay Supporters Club.

EXETER CITY:- Hunter; Walton, Doyle; Davey, Harvey, Mitchell; Simpson, Worthington, Burke, John, Buckle.
REFEREE:- Mr. A. Bond, of Fulham.
TORQUAY UNITED: Kirk; J.V.Smith, Towers; Lewis, Norman, James; Shaw, S.Collins, Dobbie, Mills, A.Collins.

This was a Devon Derby which everyone will be glad to forget as soon as possible. The keenness was certainly there, but the skill was not. Passes went astray from both sides with almost monotonous regularity. The number of moves started and carried out by both sides could be counted on the fingers of one hand. The first half, particularly the opening 20 minutes, were definitely Exeter's, but even so their form was nothing like as good as that shown previously this season. Just as the opening phase belong to Exeter so did the last period belong to Torquay, but then it was mainly through the City's fault rather than through the United's ability. Simpson had a great first half on the City's right wing, but he, too, faded after half-time, when the Exeter forwards received very poor support from their halves.
