CITY BEGAN WELL BUT SLID LOWER AND LOWER.

HARD HIGH AIMLESS KICKING AND NORWICH WERE PATCHY.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 14TH:

EXETER 1 NORWICH 1.

The huge roar that went up at exactly 16 minutes past 6 at St James's Park on Wednesday night acclaimed a goal. Not a particularly brilliant goal but a goal so well earned that it earned every solitary decibel of sound that it received. It was scored by Ronnie Burke, as persevering and as popular a centre forward as Exeter City have had. Over came the ball from a corner taken by Buckle and into the net it went from Burke's forehead. And that was almost the last thing the St James's Park crowd had to cheer about. Five minutes later Hunter allowed a centre from Gordon to slip from his hands. Brennan nodded the ball forward and Coxon rammed it home to level the scores. That was how the score remained until the end. But the standard of football slid lower and lower, almost as low as it could slide.

CITY:- Hunter; Foley, Doyle; John, Harvey, Mitchell; Simpson, Worthington, Burke, Iggleden, Buckle.

NORWICH:- Oxford; Norman, Lewis; McCrohan, Foulkes, Ashman; Gordon, Chung, Hunt, Brennan, Coxon.

For hard, high, aimless kicking this match will take some beating. Long before the end it was impossible to keep count of the number of times the ball went soaring into the terraces or the grandstand or even out of the ground altogether. It would have taxed a mechanical brain's power to count the number of inaccurate and slovenly passes.

The attendance was 8,443, with receipts of £853. 9s. Od.

THEO FOLEY'S DEBUT.
The eighteen years old Irishman, Theo Foley, who is in his first Season as a professional, made his debut in this match, and along with Simpson and Burke, was the only City player to earn praise. He came into the team in the place of Walton, who is suffering from a twisted ankle, an injury received last Saturday. Foley crossed the Irish seas from Dublin last summer, and after a
number of games as an amateur signed professional forms on his 17th Exeter
