Match 10
21st September 1955
Gillingham (a)
WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 21ST
GILLINGHAM v CITY.
CITY RAN "HOPPERS" RAGGED: AND LOST
It becomes worse with each match. Not Exeter City's display, but the task of explaining how they failed to get the result which their foot ball promised them.
GILLINGHAM 2 (MILLAR, MORGAN) EXETER CITY 1 (BURKE).
Against Gillingham at Priestfield-road it was the already too familiar story. Once again Exeter were the better footballing side. Once again from 18 yard line to 18 yard line there was only one team worth watching. And once again Exeter City lost.
GILLINGHAM:- Rigg; Parry, West; Boswell, Crombie, Riggs; Crossan, Phoenix, Sowden, Morgan, and Millar. EXETER CITY:- Hunter; Doyle, Foley; Davey, Harvey, Mitchell;
The City to a team which had little but dash and effort to commend Simpson, Worthington, Burke, John, Buckle. in attack, and nothing but sheer goal-packing determination in defence. Gillingham did indeed pack their goal, for they were run ragged by an artistic and swiftly moving set of forwards.
