EXETER CITY 2
IGGLEDEN, ELLAWAY
Half-time Reading 1 Exeter City 0.
CITY STOP READING RUN AND GAIN SAFETY.
Exeter City sprang a surprise win over Reading who had gone nine games without defeat. The win also gave Cty the two safety points they needed to finish the season above the re-election placesReading took a ten minute lead with a somewhat lucky goal, Reeves punted a free kick through the middle for Dixon to fasten onto and slam into the net, Another Reeves free kick from 20 yards forced Hunter into a diving save but this was the only hard task that the City keeper had throughout the game,
The City forwards were accurate in their moves and they made full use of wingers Simpson and Buckle. It was only a matter of time before Exeter equalised and it came ten minutes after the interval, Buckle placed a corner perfectly for Iggledon to head into the net. Few present however, could have anticipated a winning Exeter goal, which came deservedly after 65 minutes. Simpson crossed the ball right over to Buckle who promptly returned it to Elaway to stab into the net.
Reading now attacked desperately, but this made them look disjointed, not a single likely scoring chance came their way against a resolute City defence in which Harvey played a major part,
Reading:- Jones; McLaren, Reeves; Penford, Spiers, Leach; Wheeler, Green, Kirkup, Dixon, Quinlan.
Exeter City:- Hunter; Doyle, Mitchell; John, Harvey, Porteous; Simpson, Iggleden, Ellaway, Willis, Buckle.
Referee:- Mr R.E.Smith, of Newport.
