Southern League Cup 1st Round
Bath City (h)
WEDNESDAY 29th AUGUST 1956.
BAD LUCK NOT NORWICH THAT BEAT CITY.
NORWICH 1
EXETER CITY 0
Hunter, Doyle, Ferrier, John, Harvey, Porteous; Thomas, Burke, Currie, Phoenix, Buckle, Scorer Norwich McNeil,
Attendance 12,073,
Much changed Exeter City, without a goal in their first four matches were desperately unlucky to concede both points to Norwich City. The home side scored a surprise winner in the gathering gloom ten seconds from time, Stenner's corner kick was headed past Hunter by McNeil, who rose high above the City defence. Although it was a splendid goal, it was one that Norwich scarcely deserved.
Goal shy Exeter missed their big chance in the first half, smart wing raids with Buckle back at his best, split the tall home defence, but City's shooting was woefully poor, Twice Phoenix failed badly, the energetic Currie and Burke were quick to shoot but they did not trouble goalkeeper Oxford, Norwich were little better, they attacked furiously after half time only for Hunter, the best man on the field to save brilliantly from Hunt and Stenner,
On this display, neither side will trouble the promotion or re-election forecasters this season. When the City break their goal famine they may develop into a sound middle of the table side. In this match their no goal neurosis beat them more than the disjointed Norwich side,
S.L.CUP QUALIFYING ROUND.
Exeter City Reserves 7-1 Bath City
GRAHAM REES SCORED THREE OF RESERVES' SEVEN.
If goals are what City supporters are looking for the Reserves can give them, particularly 19 year-old outside-left Graham Rees.
Against Bath City in the first leg of a Southern League Cup match, at St James's Park, the City Reserves won by 7 goals to 1, and the Welsh lad hammered in three of them.
Chasing Rees for the honours in this reserve side which swamped the visitors after they had scored in the second minute was George Willis, a non-step forager. Time-table of the goals:-
2 minutes, Bath outside left beat Mitchell, sent Lobbett the wrong way and hit the ball home between goalkeeper and upright.
13 minutes: Willis lobbed the ball down the middle. Beer chased it and slammed it into the goal.
38 minutes: A surprise 30 yard shot from Rees into the roof of the net.
45 minutes: Willis pulled the ball back from the goal-line to Divers, who found the net with a very smooth shot.
53 minutes: Rees was about to take a corner when Willis was fouled and Parr scored from the penalty-spot.
58 minutes: Rees pulled down a pass from Willis and cracked it right- footed past the diving goalkeeper.
60 minutes: Willis was fouled again and Parr scored his second penalty with another thumping drive into the top of the net.
87 minutes: A centre from Simpson headed in by Rees to complete his hat-trick.
