Burke and Currie scored a goal each to help Exeter City record their first win of the season over previously unbeaten Newport County. It was a display with plenty of mistakes on this watery mud heap but one that gave the more deliberate Newport side little rest and little chance. The Welshmen had a slight edge in midfield, their passing was more accurate but City's solid defence was so competent that Hunter had only three shots to deal with, one of which rebounded from an upright, After a goalless first half, eight minutes into the second period City took the lead, a lobbed pass from Doyle sent Burke towards goal, he crashed in a shot as he was about to be challenged by two Newport defendersThe confidence increased and seven minutes later Burke took a short pass from Phoenix, skimmed it over the muddy turf to Currie and the ball ended up nestling in the bottom of the net. City's halfbacks were getting more into their stride as the game progressed, they broke up most of the Newport pitty patty moves at the start and completed a City team that is improving gradually and which is fighting hard for that improvement,

BATH CITY v CITY RESERVES.

S. L. CUP QUALIFYING ROUND.

Exeter City Reserves have qualified for the next round of the Southern League Cup despite the defeat in this match, which was the second leg of the Qualifying Competition, at Bath, by four goals to one. They had already defeated Bath at Exeter by a greater margin, 7 to 1.

Because each of the sides has gained two points they both go forward to the next stage. On Thursday night Bath was a greatly improved side and it was their second and best win of the season so far.

The forwards played much better on the heavy rain-soaked ground, and they were inspired by Brian Bush, the former Bristol City inside left, whose form was brilliant.

For Bath Pickard scored two goals and Thomas and Book one each. Book, who is the right back, ran at least half the length of the field in the second half before netting.

Exeter's goal was scored by Simpson. He was the most dangerous attack- er on the visiting side, but the forwards did not combine well.

Exeter deteriorated in the second half of a hard game played in very difficult conditions.
