CITY'S TWO MAN ATTACK GETS POINT AT NEWPORT

And Defence in Command as Welshmen's Home Record Goes

NEWPORT COUNTY 1(Terry)
EXETER CITY 1 (Burke)
Half-time Newport O City 1.
Attendance 5,000, at Somerton Park.

Newport County will not be liking the name of Exeter City for some time. Last week the City took Newport's unbeaten record and Exeter on Thursday evening became the first team this season to leave the Newport ground undefeated.

NEWPORT
Weare
Hollyman Sherwood
Thomas Wilcox Docherty

Hudson Sheppeard Terry Harris Brown

Referee: Mr C.G.Porter, of Taunton.

Buckle Willis Currie Burke Thomas Porteous Harvey John
Ferrier Doyle
Hunter
EXETER CITY

The City took the lead in the sixth minute with the best goal they have scored this season. Ferrier pushed the ball diagonally to John, moving up into Newport's half of the field. John hit a great pass through the middle. Burke completed the three man move by clipping the ball along the ground and into the corner of the net as Weare and Hollyman went for him.

ALL SQUARE.
It was a beautiful goal and it kept Exeter comfortably ahead until the 57th minute, when Terry went up to a centre from Hudson, his header finding the net well out of the reach of Hunter. By that time Newport had had slightly more of the play but with the City's defence in complete command it was always the Exeter raids which looked the more dangerous. Then came trouble from the only Newport forward to cause the City any concern, Terry, the centre-forward. The only occasions on which Hunter was called into serious action was to deal with headers from Newport's bustling leader, and as stated it was from one of those headers that the home side got their goal. For about 15 minutes the County were on top. Terry headed just wide and Harris shot against the outside of the post. And that was the signal for the City to take the initiative. Currie broke through and got in a shot as he was tackled by two men. Weare was lucky to keep it out of the net. From a corner Newport had another escape when Currie again shot past the post, and almost on time came the biggest escape of all. Weare could reach but not stop a strong header from Burke. He fell as the ball seemed to be dropping into the goal, but somehow managed to thrust up an arm and pushed the ball away. It was a fantastic escape yet it should not have mattered to the City, for the game ought to have been well won by then.

THREE WEAK SPOTS.
It will have been noticed that in listing details of the City attacks only Burke and Currie have been mentioned. The simple reason for this is that Burke and Currie were the City's attack, the beginning, the middle, and the end of it. And the guilty three, Thomas, Buckle, and Willis could not complain of lack of opportunity. They had, and Thomas particularly so, a really fine service from the backs and half-backs. Had those three weak spots been up to the standard of the rest of the team this would have been an easy away win.
