BAD LUCK PREVENTED CITY MAKING A DRAW
Their Two Best Scoring Efforts Rebounded from Posts
When a team's two best goalscoring attempts end up by rebounding from an upright it is fair to say they have had bad luck. That is just what Exeter City had in their match against Colchester at St James's Park. The first at the big bank end was a crackerjack drive from Beer, while the second, at the other end, was a drive all along the ground, from Currie. At the same time Colchester take credit for being the better balanced team, and fully deserving of their victory, by two clear goals. Besides having the bad luck referred to the City playing very badly in the second half. Until half-time, when there was no score, Exeter had
had as much of the game as the slick and speedy Colchester side, and the goalmouth thrills were about evenly divided, with Currie and Burke going close, and Hunter saving well from McCurley and Plant. But in the second half any visions of a repeat performance of the 6-1 win over Southend United on Saturday, or even visions of a went completely. small win,
LANDSLIDE PREVENTED.
It was Colchester all the way and the star of the game was Fenton, the player-manager. In the 60th minute Plant darted through the middle to score the first goal.
Twenty minutes later Smith hit the second from 25 yards after a centre from Hill had been fisted out to him by Hunter, and it was all over. But for the rugged and unyielding displays of John and Doyle, and some more fine saves by Hunter the City might have been swept away in a landslide. The half-backs were too busy trying to stop Colchester to have time to attend to constructive duties, and of the forwards only Currie showed determination. Exeter City 0 Colchester 2.

Gloucester v Exeter City Reserves
BUT THE RESERVES WERE STEADIER.
After withstanding several dangerous Gloucester attacks in the opening stages the City Reserves struck back with a lightning thrust on the right, which caught the home defence unprepared, and this goal was not equalled by Gloucester.
Divers sent over an angular shot which goalkeeper Coltman succeeded in punching down, but he failed to hold it, and in tore Rees to pop the ball safely into the net in the fifteenth minute.
Exeter's halves and backs, with skipper Mitchell prominent, were then able to successfully hold their ground against the determined forwards of the home side until the end. Exeter Reserves, profiting from the cool and constructive play shown by Marsh, Foley, and Parr, the clever distribution of the ball by Mitchell and Houghton, and the forward thrust of Divers and Rees, were much the more polished and steady side in every department, and were worthy of the points.
Gloucester City 0 Exeter City Reserves 1.
Team:- Bell; Foley, Marsh; Mitchell, Parr, Houghton; Simpson, Divers, Thomas, Phoenix, Rees.
