Match 17

Brentford (h)

Southern League
Barry (a)

Saturday, October 27th 1956.

BRENTFORD COUNTER THE MITCHELL PLAN.

EXETER CITY 1 (CURRIE) BRENTFORD 1 (FRANCIS).

This match, watched by about eight thousand spectators at St James's Park, was a dismal affair from Exeter's point of view, in contrast to their last couple of games, but they still gained a point and wasted enough chances to have won.

CITY:- Hunter; Doyle, Ferrier; John, Harvey, Porteous; Buckle, Thomas, Mitchell, Currie, Rees.

BRENTFORD: Cakebread; Bassham, Dargie; Peplow, Bragg, Coote; Heath, Taylor, Francis, Goundry, Newcombe.

REFEREE:- Mr. C.W.Kingston, of Newport.

But after its recent successful application the "Mitchell Plan" failed to work, mainly because the two inside-forwards slipped from their previous high standard. The worst offender was Thomas, and it was he who missed two glorious chances, one in each half, and in fact the City's right flank rarely seemed to be in the game at all with John and Buckle both below form as well. Doyle and Ferrier were good in defence, but Harvey allowed Francis too much room to work the ball. Porteous was the best half-back. Brentford scored in the eighth minute when Francis took a forward pass and ran on to lob the ball over Hunter's head and into the net. Currie got Exeter's equalising goal 17 minutes before the close.

BARRY BEAT CITY RESERVES: THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON.

In the first minute Barry forced a corner after Foley had deflected a shot from Elston over the goal-line. Exeter were slow in settling down and their goal had several narrow escapes before Dolman scored in the 34th minute from McLaren's centre. Elston scored a second goal after the interval to put the Welsh side two up, and when the City attacked they found the Barry defence to be just as good as their forwards. The Barry goalkeeper brought off two spectacular saves from Divers and Kelly, and Willis reduced Exeter's arrears in the 77th minute. Result:- Barry Town 2 Exeter City Reserves 1. It was the first time Barry had won a match in the Southern League this season.

BARRY Isaac; Clark, Hanbury; Prosser, Bellas, Brewer; Evans, McLaren, James,
Dolman, Elston.
CITY RESERVES
Bell; Foley, Parr; Packer, Madeley, Houghton; Kelly, Divers, Beer, Willis, Phoenix.
