Match 18
3rd November 1956
Aldershot (a)
Southern League
Plymouth Argyle Res (h)
Saturday November 3rd.
CURRIE GRABS TWO GOALS IN 4-1 AWAY TRIUMPH.
ALDERSHOT 1 (MANN)
EXETER CITY 4 (CURRIE 2, WILLIS, REES).
Exeter City were forced by injuries to make their first team change in five weeks, and brought in Willis at centre-forward for Mitchell. Harvey was injured in the first minute when he stopped a shot at point blank range from McIlvenny that would have been a goal.
Aldershot:- Jackman; Gilchrist, Mann; Alison, Reddie, McIlvenny; J.Gaynor, Tyrer, Costello, Menzies, Flint.
Exeter City:- Hunter; Doyle, Ferrier; John, Harvey, Porteous; Buckle, Thomas, Willis, Currie, Rees.
The initiative at the outset was held by Aldershot and a shot by Tyrer went over the bar. Buckle forced a corner without success, and then Currie broke through, but Jackman ran out to narrow the angle and stopped the shot. Rees and Buckle were trying to open up the game, but quick tackling came to the aid of Aldershot, who at this stage were in no danger. Hunter showed himself reliable when Aldershot threatened, saving brilliantly from a shot by Costello and another from Flint. The game underwent a surprising change after twelve minutes, Currie scoring after a quick raid into the Aldershot penalty area, and Willis followed up with a second goal a minute later. Although the City held a lead of two goals they looked less likely to eventually win than did Aldershot. Nothing was going right for them.
CURRIE AGAIN.
But then the City took another cool goal. Thomas raided on the right and centred for Currie to net from two yards out with the Aldershot defence wide open. Hunter saved from Gaynor when Aldershot attacked.
HALF TIME:
ALDERSHOT 0 EXETER CITY 3.
Eight minutes after the interval Rees scored Exeter's fourth goal, and this match was turning out to be as amazing as the one at Swindon two weeks ago. Aldershot were awarded a penalty after 57 minutes, Gaynor having been brought down, and Mann beat Hunter from the spot kick. Exeter's football in the final half hour was brilliant, especially the forward play of Rees and Buckle, who time and again had the Aldershot defence reeling.
MYSTERY RIGHT WINGER IN RESERVES TEAM.
Exeter City Reserves' outside right in their friendly match against a on side composed of players from the Plymouth League was named the programme as "A.N.Other," and the City directors refused to reveal the player's name. Simpson was on the ground but did not play.
City team:- Bell; Foley, Parr; Houghton, Packer, Major; A. N. Other, Divers, Sword, Grinney, Beer.
Plymouth team: Hood; Martin, Phillips; Donald, Oswald, Dunn; Thomas, Rickard, Lindop, Farneil, Juniper.
The City Reserves lost by 5 goals (Rickard 4, Lindop) to 4 (Grinney, Divers, "mystery" right winger 2). Bell saved a penalty kick and the City were refused one after Packer had been fouled in the area.
