WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 12TH:
EXETER CITY 12
ROYAL MARINE CORPS 2.

The Royal Marine Corps national team are not going to forget the two match West-country football tour for a while, for after being beaten 12-2 by Plymouth Argyle on Monday they succumbed by exactly the same margin to Exeter City at St James's Park on Wednesday, both matches being played under the floodlights. Exeter City's scoring spree was sparked off as early as the second minute when Ray John put through a centre from Rees. Four more goals fell to the sharp-shooting John, back in his old position of centre forward, in 15, 38, 48, and 51 minutes. Exeter's other goals were obtained by Divers, Houghton, Rees, Phoenix, Buckle (two), and Mitchell.

City team:- Hunter; Doyle, Ferrier; Mitchell, Harvey, Phoenix; Thomas, Houghton, John, Divers, and Buckle.

Apart from scoring twelve goals in a friendly match on Wednesday, the City also signed on an experienced defender who will play an important role in the Grecians' first-eleven. The new man is George Lackenby, a six-footer from Newcastle United, who can operate in any of the full-back and half-back positions. Lackenby was born in Newcastle 25 years ago, and his entire football career has been spent in the colours of the famous "Geordies," whom he joined straight from North-east junior soccer in October 1950. At Newcastle he was a colleague of Frank Houghton, who came to Exeter two and a half years ago after being out of football for four years. Lackenby has been selected to play at right half for the City in their match at St James's Park on Saturday, against Coventry.

Exeter City's teams for next Saturday's matches are:
  • 1st team v Coventry: - Hunter; Doyle and Ferrier; Lackenby, Harvey, and Porteous; Thomas, Houghton, John, Currie, and Buckle.
  • 2nd team v Llanelly: Bell; Bowkett and Mitchell; Packer, Madeley, and Phoenix; Simpson, Rees, Beer, Jenkins, and Stenner.
