TORQUAY DEFEAT EXETER CITY IN MUD BATTLE.
FERRIER'S OWN GOAL IS ONLY ONE OF GAME.
SATURDAY DECEMBER 29th
TORQUAY UNITED 1
EXETER CITY 0.
Plainmoor was nothing but a sea of mud for today's Devon Derby match between these clubs. Heavy rain was falling continuously and the only strips of grass visible were about a yard either side of the touch lines. The referee, Mr Mervyn Griffiths, of Newport, had trouble in getting to the game. His train broke down on the other side of Tunnel, and he had to come the rest of the way by taxi. the Severn

The game was won and lost with the very last kick of the first - half. Mills shot along the ground from ten yards out and the would certainly have gone wide but it struck Ferrier and glanced into the opposite corner of the net. This was a tragedy for Ferrier, who had played as well as any other member of the Exeter side and had kept the Torquay danger man, Shaw, well under control. It was typical of this game that the only goal came from two mistakes. Mills's shot was going wide and Ferrier deflected it into the Exeter net, as described above. And that seemed to be the only way for a goal to be scored, because on this mud-heap mistakes just had to be made. There can be no criticism of anyone. Both sides played as hard as it was possible to do and kicked as hard as they could. There was little else they could do for most attempts at passing, on this surface, broke down. On the run of the play Torquay had the edge, for they did mostly all their booting in Exeter's half, although a couple of the best chances out of the few created did fall to the City. Attendance 8,065.

Exeter City Res. v Bedford Town
RESERVES GET A GAME AT LAST AND WIN.
It was a case of fourth time lucky for Exeter City Reserves today, as after their last three successive Southern League matches had been called off they at last turned out, as named, to meet Bedford Town at St James's Park. Plummer, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, was making his debut for Bedford.
City: Bell; Foley, Mitchell; Phoenix, Packer, Major; Simpson, Robinson, Sword, Divers, Stenner.
Bedford:- Pope; Cooke, Quinn; Farquhar, Craig, Garwood; Steel, Yates, Plummer, Murray, Bull.
Divers after 20 minutes took a good pass from Stenner and weaving his way past the hesitant Bedford defence crashed the ball past Pope. In the 30th minute Simpson put across a neat ball, and Divers was on the spot to head in goal number two.
Final score:-
Exeter City Reserves 2 Bedford Town 0.
1,514 spectators, £36. 11s.6d. taken at the gate.
