Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City met for the third time this season today. Behind them they had a record of one win each at St James's Park, 2-0 to Argyle in the Cup and 2-1 to City in the League. And in front of them they had the prospect of another hard game in very poor conditions. Drizzling rain and a strong wind served to reduce the number of spectators, and shortly before the teams came out there were wide gaps on the terraces and in the grandstand. People were coming in all the time, though, and the crowd in the end looked to be about normal for a game between these old rivals.
TWO TO ONE.
So the Argyle came out on top with two wins to the City's one. But, overshadowing everything else in this game, even the fact that this was Exeter's biggest defeat of the season, was the injury to Frank Houghton, who skippered the Grecians today in the absence of Doyle. After missing fifteen minutes because of the first leg injury which was sustained five minutes before half-time, he came back, and he had only been on the field a short while when he was tackled heavily in trying to score. This time the injury was more serious, and he had to be carried off on a stretcher. And every one of the Plymouth goals except the first was scored while Houghton was off the field. And what a tragedy of errors three of the five goals were, one a bad pass back (by Ferrier), one an own goal (by Harvey), and one a penalty goal (scored by Davis after Rowley had been fouled by Mitchell). The Argyle certainly looked the better side even when the City were at full strength. But what might have happened had the City been with eleven men in the second half when the wind was in their favour is a matter purely for conjecture.
