Match 30
12th January 1957
Crystal Palace (h)

Southern League
Chelmsford (a).

EXETER CITY 2
CRYSTAL PALACE 1:

SATURDAY JANUARY 12TH.

LACKENBY AND BUCKLE SCORE FOR THE CITY

Arnold Mitchell, the third skipper in three weeks, led the City out, and won the toss, choosing to play from the far end. The Rugby counter attraction at the County Ground, St Thomas's, plus the continued bad weather, were jointly responsible for keeping the attendance down. At the kick-off not many more than 2,000 were present. Today's match yielded two valuable points for the City, but it was not a particularly satisfactory display. Exeter had neither the method or the cohesion of Crystal Palace, and the home defence for once was in a bad way. In this department only Hunter and Ferrier impressed, and there were some very shaky moments. The City, however, had three good inside-forwards, with Lackenby outstanding in all aspects of the game. Lackenby scored Exeter's first goal after 12 minutes, a stinging left footed drive entering the net well out of Potter's reach. Harrison replied for the Palace shortly after the interval and Buckle regained Exeter's lead a few minutes later.

EXETER CITY:- Hunter; Mitchell, Ferrier; Packer, Harvey, Porteous; Thomas, Lackenby, Currie, John, Buckle.

CRYSTAL PALACE:- Potter; Edwards, McDonald; Long, Choules, Noakes; Harrison, Belcher, Berry, Pierce, Deakin.

Southern League
Chelmsford v Exeter City Res

CHELMSFORD BEAT CITY RESERVES BY FOUR CLEAR GOALS.

A strong wind was not conducive to good football and Exeter, who had it at their backs, found the ball running away from them. Dicker after 35 minutes headed a goal for Chelmsford, and after the interval the score was added to by Brewer, Bainbridge with a penalty kick, and Hamilton.
Chelmsford 4 City Reserves nil.
Team:- Bell; Foley, Marsh; Phoenix, Madeley, Major; Simpson, Divers, Burke, Willis, Rees.
Referee, Mr G.Jarvis of Bromley.

  • PARR TRANSFERRED.
The Exeter City player, Steve Parr, full-back or centre-half, who has not had the best of luck as regards injuries since coming to Devon, has been transferred to Rochdale. Before joining Exeter City he was a member of the Liverpool F.C., and made 20 appearances for them in season 1951-52 in the 1st Division of the League.
