Match 31

Southend (a)

Southern League
Dartford (h)

Saturday 19th January

SOUTHEND UNITED 2 EXETER CITY 0

HALF TIME 2-0.
There was very little grass on Southend's new pitch at Root's Hall, when Exeter City played on it today. In fact it was in a pretty bad state, the field, apart from a few patches round the corners, being covered in mud. Southend scored two goals through Hollis and Baron in the first half, and Exeter, fielding an unaltered team, were beaten by those goals. It was moreover a defeat which might well have been heavier. Southend were on top from start to finish and only a great improvement by the City defence in the second half stopped them from scoring several more goals. Ferrier and Packer were the City's best defenders, but Packer, like the rest of the defence, rarely used the ball to advantage. At wing-forward Exeter were very weak, and the inside men had little more than effort to commend them.

Southend:- Threadgold; Williamson, Andersen; Duthie, Stirling, Lawler; Barker, Baron, Hollis, Thomson, McGuigan.

Exeter City: Hunter; Mitchell, Ferrier; Packer, Harvey, Porteous; Thomas, Lackenby, Currie, John, Buckle. Referee:- Mr C.W.Kingston, of Newport.

Exeter City Reserves v Dartford
SWORD GOES OFF WITH CONCUSSION.

Alan Sword, who refused to sign for Bideford earlier in the week, the City and Bideford having agreed terms, was at outside-right for the Reserves against Dartford this afternoon at St James's Park. A headlong collision in the 22nd minute, however, resulted in Sword, who was concussed, being carried off the field on a stretcher, while Asher, the Dartford centre-half, had to go to the dressing room with a gash over his right eye.
City Reserves:- Bell; Bowkett, Foley; Phoenix, Madeley, Major; Sword, Divers, Burke, Willis, Rees.
Dartford:- Kirkwood; Barton, Lyons; Cryle, Asher, Wickers; Cresswell, Ritchie, Winter, Tuck, Loukes.
Referee:- Mr R.H.Tarrant.

Dartford gave the City Reserves a stunning defeat at St James's Park today, winning by 3 goals to 0. Winter, who scored in the first minute of the game, got another goal after the interval, and Tuck added the third. The game developed into a rough and tumble, with several players, on both sides, showing signs of bad temper. Willis, Rees, and Lyons were all in trouble with the referee, and in a general skirmish five minutes from time the Dartford player "booked" by Mr Tarrant.
