Match 34

Q.P.R (a)

Southern League
11th February 1937
Worcester City (a)

Saturday, February 9th 1957,
at Shepherd's Bush, London.

RANGERS 5
(ANDREWS, LONGBOTTOM 3, KERRINS)
EXETER CITY 3
(CURRIE 2, HARVEY PENALTY)

Last Saturday the City manager Mr Norman Dodgin left Exeter early to go on a scouting trip to the Midlands. Mr Line also went. The rumour circulated in Exeter that the City had made an offer for the transfer from Coventry City of Dennis Uphill, but this was net confirmed by Mr Sidney Thomas, when questioned by the local press. But just the same Exeter City have signed a new player from Coventry, and he is Noel Simpson, their left half back. He is the brother of Dennis, already a City player, and in a lengthy career with Coventry has turned out for them in just over 250 League matches plus sundry cup-ties and other games. He was born at Mansfield, is 33 years old, and in the first two seasons following the end of the war was with Notts Forest. He made his first appearance for the City today, coming into the team at left-half in place of Packer.

Q.P.R.- Springett; Woods, Ingham; Petchey, Rutter, Andrews; Hellawell, Longbottom, Peacock, Cameron, Kerrins. Exeter City. Hunter; Mitchell, Ferrier; Lackenby, Harvey, N.Simpson; Thomas, Divers, Currie, John, Rees.
Referee:- Mr G.W.Pullin of Bristol.

The pitch at Loftus-road was in a terrible state, and covered in mud. Mistakes were bound to be frequent on such a surface. But despite the conditions and some unpleasant second half incidents this was a good, rousing game which the Rangers just about deserved to win. Most of the trouble for Exeter came from the Rangers' wingers, who were generally too fast and too clever for Mitchell and Ferrier. For Exeter Lackenby had a great game at right half while on the other flank the newcomer impressed with his skill and ball distribution. Lackenby, who worked like a Trojan, earned the displeasure of some of the spectators behind Exeter's goal in the second half for several over-robust tackles on Kerrins, and the referee eventually called the police to that section of the crowd.

  • The friendly match at St James's Park between Exeter City Reserves and Royal Navy (Plymouth Command) had to be cancelled owing to the waterlogged state of the pitch.

Southern League
Worcester v Exeter City Res
Monday February 11th:

Exeter City Reserves accepted their first half scoring opportunities in workmanlike manner in Monday's re-arranged floodlit Southern League match at Worcester, postponed from Boxing Day. A successful rearguard action to hold off determined attacks by the home team. There was no further scoring.

Worcester:- Jeynes; Salisbury, Williams; Wilcox, Laurie, Scrine; Grieve, Follan, Knowles, Cocum, McClelland.
Exeter City Res:- Bell; Foley, Ferrier; Phoenix, Harvey, Porteous; Thomas, Burke, Currie, John, Buckle.
Referee:- Mr J.J.Baxter, of Hereford.

Exeter owed their early effectiveness largely to the ability of their wingers to make ground quickly over the gluepot surface and to their centre-forward's nippiness and accurate shooting. Grieve put Worcester ahead after only five minutes but the lead only lasted for five minutes, Currie scoring for Exeter. Currie and Buckle scored within a minute of one another just before the half-time interval.
