Southern League
Merthyr Tydfil (h)
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 16TH 1957.
EXETER CITY 1
(TENNANT OWN GOAL)
BRIGHTON 3
(TENNANT, NEATE 2).
FULL BACK SCORES FOR EACH SIDE.
Brighton's stocky little full-back Tennant shook his head ruefully at St James's Park on Saturday within a minute of scoring the visiting side's first goal. The reason for his disappointment was that within that minute he had lost his side's lead by putting the ball into his own goal. Right from the kick-off after Brighton had scored Exeter City got on the attack and Tennant tried to slip the ball back to Gill. But the goalkeeper missed it and the ball went into the Brighton net.
Exeter City:- Hunter; Mitchell, Ferrier; Lackenby, Harvey, N.Simpson; Thomas, Burke, Currie, John, Rees.
Brighton:- Gill; Tennant, Jennings; Burtenshaw, Whitfield, Wilson; Gordon, Mundy, Harburn, Foreman, Neate.
As things turned out it did not matter, because that was the only goal Exeter got and Brighton scored twice more. Exeter had bad luck in that for part of the second half Ferrier was merely a limping passenger on the wing because of a leg injury which he sustained in the opening half. Finally Ferrier had to retire and the City played the last quarter of the match a man short.
Southern League
Merthyr Tydfil v Exeter City Res
In the Southern League Merthyr Tydfil, playing Exeter City Reserves on their own ground, were beaten by 3 to 2.
Unlucky Merthyr
Merthyr 2-3 Exeter City
Exeter's armour-plated defence was too tough for luckless Merthyr. After battering their way to the interval with a succession of all out offensives, the Welshmen were two goals down through split second breakaways by Alan Sword and George Willis. Merthyr changed their tactics in the second half, putting skipper Harry Lowe to lead the forward line, Seven minutes later Brian Humphreys scored, but it was not until the closing seconds that Lowe headed a late reward. It would have been a hard-earned equaliser, but a few minutes before the Welshmen relaxed their grip and Alan Marsh raced through for the city match winner.
