Match 39
13th March 1957
Reading (a)

WEDNESDAY MARCH 13TH

READING 4 (Dixon, Wheeler 2, Cronin)
EXETER CITY 0.
CITY DEFENCE TOOK THE HONOURS.

Exeter City in their postponed League match (from January 5th) under floodlights at Elm Park, Reading, only came really into the picture for twenty minutes of the game. During the rest of the time they were very much on the defensive, and but for some stout defence by Mitchell, Doyle, and Hunter the score against them might well have been doubled. This, coupled with poor markmanship on the part of Reading's forwards, prevented the City from being overwhelmed.

READING:- Meeson; McLaren, Reeves; Anderten, Spiers, Evans; Wheeler, Whitehouse, Dixon, Campbell, Cronin.
EXETER CITY:- Hunter; Doyle, Mitchell; Lackenby, Harvey, N.Simpson; Buckle, Currie, John, Willis, Rees.

Exeter were largely outclassed as far as football approach work was concerned, and all the honours went to the City defence for keeping the opposing forwards out for such long periods. Attendance 6,714.

  • ANOTHER NEW PLAYER FOR EXETER CITY.
DENNIS CHURMS OF COVENTRY CITY.

Continuing to raid Coventry City for new additions to their playing staff Exeter City have now signed Dennis Churms, inside-forward. He will be in the City's eleven which faces Aldershot on Saturday at inside-left, and will thereby renew acquaintance with Noel Simpson, now Exeter City's captain. Dennis Simpson is another old Coventry-ite
now at Exeter but not at present in the first eleven. Churms, who is 25 years old, was born at Rotherham, and played first for Spurley Hey, and then Rotherham United. He joined Coventry City last June. He is the man whose goal for the Coventry club beat Exeter City at Highfield-road in the opening match of the season, his name being incorrectly spelt as "Chalmers" in these notes.
