SATURDAY MARCH 16TH 1957

EXETER CITY 1 (THOMAS)
ALDERSHOT 1 (JACKSON PEN.)

AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

Dennis Churms, signed from Coventry yesterday, made his first appear ance for Exeter City against Aldershot at St James's Park today. He got off to a very good start with his new team-mates, and in the tenth minute put across a centre which Thomas met and put the City a goal up.
EXETER CITY:- Hunter; Doyle, Mitchell; John, Harvey, N.Simpson; Buckle, Thomas, Currie, Churms, Rees.
ALDERSHOT:- Ames; Jefferson, Jackson; Lacey, Price, Wetton; Gaynor, Richardson, Costello, Menzies, Flint. REFEREE:- Mr B.Griffiths, of Newport.

Exeter City had little to feel pleased about with this point from a weak Aldershot team. They started well, but once Aldershot had drawn level with a penalty for hands against Doyle in the 22nd minute the City were a lifeless
combination who only occasionally looked like getting the better of the robust visiting defence. Even so, the City looked more like scoring than Aldershot, who were absolutely hopeless near goal. of The newcomer, Dennis Churms, impressed greatly with his use the ball, while Currie and Thomas occasionally took the eye.

Guildford v Exeter City Reserves
RESERVES LOSE AT GUILDFORD.

Exeter City Reserves were hoping to halt their long run of defeats on the Joseph's Road ground, Guildford, six years having passed since they last won there. But they had an unhappy start. After preliminary skirmishing the home side launched a quick raid, and Major, trying to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper, kicked too hard and Bell could only watch as it sped into the net. Exeter's reply was spirited and Beer scored but was ruled offside. A second goal, by Pearson, was conceded in the 35th minute and another one three minutes from the end, by Hope.
City Reserves (v Guildford at Guildford): Bell; Foley, Marsh; Phoenix, Packer, Porteous; Bowkett, Divers, Beer, Major, Kenshole.

Final score:-
Guildford 3 Exeter City Reserves 0.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 20TH 1957
CITY RESERVES 1 (ROBINSON) HASTINGS 2 (THOMPSON, GREEN).
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

The man to be sympathised with most of all is Alec Bell. Exeter City Reserves' goalkeeper is forced, every week, and sometimes more often than that, to stand in his goal and watch the Reserves play. Paying spectators can leave, of course, if they want to, or stay away from the ground altogether. But Bell has to stand there as in Wednesday's game against Hastings United and watch a poor visiting team win 2-1 after the Reserves had had most of the game.

EXETER CITY RES:- Bell; Mitchell, Marsh; Phoenix, Packer, Porteous; Robinson, M.Cleverly, John, Divers, Rees.
HASTINGS:- Ball; Hall, Batchelor; Peacock, Boon, Hernon; Taylor, Green, Griffiths, Thompson, Shepherd.

It was a poor display from both teams, with hardly any good football and even fewer thrills. Hastings got both points because of their revival in the last 30 minutes.
