Match 41
23rd March 1957
Watford (a)
Southern League
Yeovil Town (h)
WATFORD 1 (Brown)
EXETER CITY 1 (Divers).
VICARAGE ROAD, WATFORD,
SAT. MARCH 23RD.
With the odds strongly in their favour Exeter City should have been able to gain their first away victory since November 3rd. Virtually presented with an early goal they lost the advantage to a mediocre side reduced to ten men throughout the second half.
WATFORD: Gooch; Harrop, Shipwright; F.Mitchell, Brown, Catleugh; Walker, Wilson, Anderson, Graham, Cook.
EXETER CITY:- Hunter; John, A.Mitchell; Lackenby, Harvey, N.Simpson; Thomas, Currie, Willis, Churms, Divers.
Stricken by injury Exeter fielded a re-shuffled forward line but to no avail. It lacked balance, cohesion, and understanding and consequently the attack was restricted to a few sharp, vigorous raids. Both sides missed scoring chances and equally enjoyed narrow escapes. Exeter went ahead in the 15th minute when Divers intercepted Harrop's risky back-pass to Gooch and found the narrow gap between goalkeeper and post. The Watford skipper, Frank Mitchell, who received a facial injury in the 40th minute, did not reappear for the second half. To their credit Watford overcame this handicap by doubling and even trebling their efforts, which were deservedly rewarded in the 57th minute when Brown volleyed Cook's free kick into Exeter's net.
