Exeter City v Managers X1

Monday 1st April 1957
Benefit Game for Keith Harvey
Exeter City v Managers X1

On Monday, April 1st, kick-off 6.30 p.m., a benefit match for Keith Harvey and Arnold Mitchell was played at St James's Park between an all-star "Managers XI" and Exeter City first-team. The "all stars" were composed of Alf Wood (ex Coventry and Northampton) goalkeeper; Laurie Scott and Walley Barnes (both ex Arsenal) backs; Jim Watson (Motherwell and Scotland), Ron Suart (ex Blackpool and Blackburn), and Ike Clarke (ex Portsmouth and Yeovil Town), half backs; Freddie Cox (ex Arsenal and Tottenham), Jimmy Hagan (Sheffield United), Jack Rowley (Plymouth Argyle, ex-Manchester United and England), Ted Bates (Southampton), and Duggie Regan (Exeter City and Bristol City), forwards.

Churms put Exeter in front in the first half, and following the half time interval Rowley equalised. Two minutes later Currie gave Exeter the lead again, and this result, 2-1, was the final score. It was a most entertaining match, played at less than half-pace, and with all this international talent on view, by far the best man on the field was Johnny Divers, the City inside left.
