Millwall tried to steamroller their way through the City defence but they were outwitted by the guile and toughness of City's defenders. It was a case of brawn bowing the knee to outstanding football by side that belied their lowly position. City's success was mainly gained by the work of a brilliant halfback line in which Simpson played a captans part, also Harvey stood up magnificently to the weightyMillwall attacks, Bell made several fine saves as Millwall tried to wear down the Exeter resistance, he was expertly covered by John and Mitchell, Lackenby too had a big say in Exeter's victory, and was quick to seize on a clearance by Hurley to score the opening goal with a rocket like drive from fully 25 yards in the 8th minute, Millwall went close to scoring on several occasions before Currie notched Exeter's second goal in the 12th minute, Millwall stormed the City goal but they had to wait until the 49th minute when Anslow got their only goal from a penalty. Harvey and company resisted further home attacks and the pressure eased, In the 68th minute City went further ahead when buckle scored with a long range first the shotIt was a decisive goal for Millwall afterwards gradually faded from the game.

Beaten at home by Exeter City on Good Friday, Millwall tried in vain to steamroller their way through the Exeter rearguard, but they were outwitted by the guile and toughness of a determined defence. The City's success was gained mainly by the work of a brilliant half back line, in which Noel Simpson played a captain's part, and Harvey stood up magnificently to the weighty attacks of Shepherd and Anslow.
