Harry Bailey Exeter City's goalkeeper from 1923 to 1927 now a gateman at Griffin Park summed the game up by saying "That lad Bell played well" and he was right, for the only consolation from City's defeat by the Bees was the display by goalkeeper Bell, The spotlight was on him from the start when the referee made him change from a green to a red jersey. Bare seconds after the kick off he was in action and there was precious few moments of rest for him during the rest of the game. Brentford moved the ball intelligently with long raking passes for which their forwards thrived on, The City forwards when they did move, either blinded the ball wildly or tip tapped to close, For once City's defence did not play well, Simpson was by far and away the best player in a shocking halfback line and with such little resistence in front of them John and Mitchell were almost helpless no matter how they tried. Not surrisingly in those circumstances that even the best defence should conced a goal, Two in the first half, Taylor in 23 minutes and Harvey an own goal ten minutes laterThe third Brentford goal netted by Francis just one minute into the second halfBrentford should have made if half a dozen at least and with luck could have made it 10-0,

Match Summary

Judging by their performance at Griffin Park it is hard to believe, for those who did not see the game, how Exeter City managed to beat Millwall on Good Friday. On their form against Brentford the City can hardly hope to be any where else than at the foot of the League table. Seldom can a forward line have had fewer constructive ideas than the City attack. Cakebread, the Brentford goalkeeper, did not have one single shot to save. The Exeter team was unchanged for the third successive game and Bell continued to stand in for George Hunter.
