Match 48
22nd April 1957
Millwall (h)

Southern League
Lovell’s Athletic (a)

EXETER CITY 1 (CURRIE)
MILLWALL 1 (PACEY).

EASTER MONDAY APRIL 22ND AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

Exeter City dangle on the thinnest thread, one place and one point above the re-election spot following the completion of their Easter programme, with just twqo games left to play, Cituy could have helped themselves in this game. A great goal by Currie gave them the lead in the ninth minute and they were playing with a lot more life and ideas than against Brentford, they looked well on the road to completing an Easter double over Millwall when in the 16th minute Pacey chipped in a centre from Hazlett, and that was how the score remained despite City's slight supremacy. What hampered City's coring efforts was the complete command that Millwall's centre half Hurley had over Lackenby who has already proved that he is no centre forward. The biggest danger came from the Currie-Buckle wing prompted well by Simpson, The City captain concentrated so much on attack that he often let Shepherd slip away and give Bell a chance to show his abilityIn front of Bell both John and Mitchell played well, The City would have got no more than they deserved had they won. It looked as if they were set for success in the 9th minute when Currie scored a well-taken goal. Taking the ball on the run he beat Veitch and moved intowards goal, and from 25 yards hit a swerving shot into the roof of the net. The tonic effect of this goal was obvious. It was a confident Exeter team that renewed their attacks and shook a none too reliable pair of full-backs. In the 17th minute however the City suffered a set-back. Millwall got going on the right, Hazlett sent over a properly placed centre, and Pacey found himself in the right spot among a bunch of players, to beat Bell from almost under the crossbar. Compared with the match against Brentford on Saturday this one was a classic. The only real weakness in the Exeter side was at centre forward, where Lackenby was inexpierenced.
