BLUES 3
Bell; Foley, Mitchell; Lightly, Packer, Waterman; Wilson, Currie, Calland, Atkinson, Rees, Scorers Reds Robinson, Rapley. Blues Currie, Calland 2,
Attendance 1,613,
Tommy Skuse was an amateur in the Bristol Rovers combination side last season, The youngest and biggest Exeter City team for many a year, those claims became obvious in this, the first practice match and it was one of the biggest that gave the crowd most to shout about, former Torquay United centre forward Ted Calland for he scored two of the Blues goals, both with vicious low drives and three times he gave Hunter the chance to shine, leaping to save a stinging smack on target shots. Those two goals were sandwiched between the goals from the young Reds forward lineOne in the 20th minute when Robinson netted from a centre from Skuse and the second in the 58th minute by Rapley after Hill had been stopped in his tracks, backed up by a superior halfback line, the Red attack allowed Bell to show his ability. Despite the attraction of so many new forwards, City's only new defender MacDonald looks at first sight to be one of the best signings, an intelligent player who can get the ball and use it. Skipper Simpson and John were the best of City's old hands. The third Blues goal in the 79th minute was scored by Currie,

TOMMYS THE BOY TO WATCH.
REDS.
Hunter, (Bell)John, MacDonald; Butterworth, (Lightly), HarveySimpson; Wilson, Currie, Calland, Atkinson, Churms,
BLUES 1
Lobbett; Foley, Mitchell; Lightly, (Bowkett), Packer, Waterman; Robinson, Hill, (Grinney), Rapley, (Beer), Cleverley, Skuse,
Scorers Reds Og, Calland Blues Grinney.
Attendance 2,386,
Receipts £181,
It is never wise to take much notice of practice matches. So any City fans who felt miserable, after this not very thrilling practice match should not take it to much to heart. The first team probables Reds beat the youthful Blues 2-1 and those two goals were absolute giftsFirst Bowkett headed into his own net in the 55th minute, then Lobbett kicked a goal kick straight to Calland ten minutes later and the City centre forward standing on the edge of the penalty area wont have an easier chance all season. Apart from a header and a 25 yard shot which hit the woodwork both from Atkinson, these were the only occasions that the Reds looked like scoring. The value of practice games is not the number of goals scored, Ian Grinney's sole effort being the Blues contribution, the value lies in helping to get the players match fit. Both Atkinson and Wilson looked more impressive than in the first game and MacDonald and Butterworth added to the already good impression that they had given. The player who really took the eye was the tricky little Skuse at outside left.
TUESDAY 20th AUGUST 1957.
NEW P. A. SYSTEM READY SATURDAY.
A brand new loudspeaker system should be installed at St James's Park in time for Saturday's first League match against Southend United. It is the very latest system for feeding difficult grounds. The present system was put in just after the war and although the equipment is still alright, the system is unsatisfactory.
