Starting with Solway Star, Alexander Pool had also played for Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City by the time he joined Exeter City in 1926. Although never a regular he made over seventy league appearances in three seasons before moving to Stalybridge Celtic.
Alex started his career with Annan-based club Solway Star before signing for Blackburn Rovers in 1921 where he spent four seasons making 17 league appearances. Moving to Bristol City for the 1925/26 season, he injured his back in a motorcycle accident on the eve of the campaign but recovered to play in 12 league games.
Alexander linked up with Exeter City in the summer of 1926 and embarked on his best spell of his career as, after making his debut against Merthyr Town at St James’ Park in August 1926, he went on to make 27, 23 and 24 league appearances during his three seasons with the club scoring against Swindon Town, Crystal Palace and Charlton Athletic.
Leaving St James’ Park in the 1929 close season, he signed for Stalybridge Celtic.
