This was a team victory of football and fight from every City player, but above all it was a victory for both teams over the mud and slush. City and Argyle rose above the conditions and rose above the Third Division level to keep up a blistering action packed pace throughout the game, It was the most thrilling, most rousing game at St James's Park this season and the finest City v Argyle clash for many years. City had a little more determination than Plymouth, they also had Nicholls who scored a brilliant hat trick and showed his poaching ability, The Cily defence was quick to cover, tough and workmanlike Oliver made a fine impression on his first home appearance, After 24 minutes Argyle took the lead. A quickly taken free kick resulted in Penk firing in a cross shot off the post, Eleven minutes later City vere on terms, Oliver to Rees a ball down the right wing, and Nicholls cut inside to score, Five minutes into the second half Calland's square pass enabled Nicholls to add another. In the 67th minute Nicholls completed his hat trick, Gould pulled one back for Plymouth six minutes later but a minute from the end Nicholls was denied his fourth goal of the match when he was pulled down, Mitchell scored from the penalty spot,

FRIENDLY.
