Sercombe played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

Having previously appeared for the by now-defunct Exeter Argyle and with just one Exeter City reserve game under his belt, he made his first-team debut against Tavistock on 30 November 1907.

In a season when thirty-two players appeared for the first-team it proved to be his only-ever appearance.
