Smith, a goalkeeper from St Luke’s College, played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

An aspiring teacher from the “training college”, he played once for Exeter City’s first-team against the 2nd Devonshire Regiment on 20 October 1906 during a season when forty-two players appeared in the first team.

[Not clear if this is the same Smith who played during the following season in an outfield position. Both seasons saw a high turnover of players who were often drafted in to play just one game].
