OLDHAM SECOND HALF REVIVAL SHOOK EXETER.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10th

CITY 3 OLDHAM ATHLETIC 2.

Two more points were collected by Exeter City, playing at St James's Park on Wednesday evening against Oldham Athletic. But the Grecians could not possibly have gone closer to defeat. For the first 45 minutes the City played like champions and were fully worthy of their lead of 3 goals to nil at the interval. They slammed in those three great goals inside 26 minutes, CallandMitchell, and Rees in turn beating Teece. Then came the change. Oldham switched Spurdle and Thompson into the two inside forward positions and brought Bazley and Phoenix back. The scheming of Spurdle and the bull-dozing brilliance of Thompson, plus the City's sudden lethargy, which turned later to frenzy, was responsible for changing the appearance of the game as completely as from white to black.

FIRST AT ST JAMES'S PARK THIS SEASON.

After Hunter in the second half had made two miraculous saves from Thompson and one from Phoenix the first goal against Exeter at the Park this season was shot home by Thompson. That was in the 15th minute of the second half. Eleven minutes later Thompson out on the left wing hooked the ball into the middle for Phoenix to hammer in the second goal. Hunter, Mitchell, Oliver, and Rees were the best players in a City team which failed to sustain its first-half momentum. For Oldham the heroes were Thompson and Spurdle.

Exeter City: Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Harvey; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Nicholls, Dale.
Oldham:- Teece; Naylor, West; Spurdle, Taylor, Thompson; Walker, Bazley, Duffy, Phoenix, Clark.

Referee:- Mr L. Callaghan.
Attendance 9,562.

Trowbridge v Exeter City Reserves
CITY RESERVES CRASH IN CUP TIE.

Trowbridge, who won the first leg by 1-0 at Exeter last week, swept the City out of the Southern League Cup with 3 goals in the first half and another 4 afterwards, result 7-1 and on the aggregate 8-1.

The Exeter attack fiddled too much in midfield and lacked a good marksman. The defence crumbled under the onslaught of the speedy Trowbridge forwards. The goalkeeper could hardly be blamed. Henderson (3), Compton (2), and White (2) scored the Trowbridge goals and Jackson shot wide from a penalty given against Rutter for hands. Robinson scored Exeter's goal.
