Match 12
8th October 1958
Aldershot (a)

EXETER CITY 2
(CALLAND, REES)
ALDERSHOT 0.
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 8th
AT ST JAMES'S PARK.

Exeter City in beating Aldershot kept their home record, but missed many goals. Without exaggeration they could have, and should have, scored five more goals at least.

Exeter City:- Hunter; Foley, MacDonald; Mitchell, Oliver, Harvey; Stiffle, Rees, Calland, Birch, Dale.

Aldershot:- Marshall; Henry, Goldie; Mundy, Howe, Watson; Walters, Stepney, Price, Lacey, Tyrer.

Referee:- Mr B.Griffiths of Newport. Linesmen: Messrs W.Webster and E.Ley.

The City completely outplayed a poor Aldershot side. Mitchell and Oliver shone in a good defence, and Rees and Dale starred in the fast-moving forward line, but the finishing was deplorable.

EXETER ARE SO KIND!

Exeter 2, Aldershot 0

ALDERSHOT manager Harry Evans used to play for Exeter City, and his old club treated his team kindly last night- they only banged in two goals instead of the twenty they should have had!

Centre forward Ted Calland got Exeter's first goal in the fifteenth minute and young Welshman Graham Rees made it 2-0 after fifty-nine minutes.

But before, between and after those two they were as guilty as the rest of missing golden opportunities. It is easy to see how Aldershot's defence has let in thirty-eight goals in fourteen games.

Although Exeter won 2-0, it was no exageration that they could have and should have scored at least five more goalsCity completely outplayed lowly Aldershot. Mitchell and Oliver shone in a good defence and Rees and Dale starred in the fast moving forward line, but oh the finishing!

Calland got the first goal in the 15th minute after Stiffle and Dale had worked the ball down the right wing, Then the chances went begging, Stiffle, Dale and Calland all missed when it was easier to score and City had to wait until the 59th minute for the second goal when Rees, full of dash and always trying found the net.

City were better all round and at times they played football that had Aldershot completely baffled, and cutting the visiting defence to shreds. In fact Aldershot were only as good as Exeter let them be and that was not very good at allOnce they did beat Hunter, then Mitchell booted clear. Mitchell was a determined tackler with Oliver ever ready to cover and certain in the air, they snuffed out any Aldershot threat.
