Tipping played for Exeter City in the Plymouth and District League before the club turned professional in 1908.

Appearing at the start of the 1906/07 season, he made a goalscoring debut against the Devon & Cornwall Light Infantry on 6 October 1906 before hitting a hat-trick in the following game against Plymouth Argyle reserves. 

Finishing his brief Exeter City career with a goal against the Royal Marines on 17 November 1906, he brought his tally to six goals from just five appearances.
